TweetDeck joins the Twitter flock

The last week has been, as I’m sure you can imagine, hectic. It’s all out the bag now – TweetDeck has been acquired by Twitter. It’s absolutely amazing news and I’m really proud to be a part of it. As part of the deal, my employment, along with the entire team, has transferred over to Twitter.

I came along fairly late in the day in all this having only joined in January of this year. I never guessed that by now I’d be working for Twitter as a Software Engineer. I’m totally stoked.

I’ll still be working on mobile clients – and hopefully I’ll get more time to work on Chrome hacks.

So, congratulations everyone! Special congratulations to Iain… it proves that scratching an itch really can lead you down paths you never expect. Let this be a lesson to Software Engineers / Programmers everywhere.

Dropbox authentication: insecure by design

I have tested this, and can back up what Derek is saying. It is more than a little worrying – but also easy for the Dropbox guys to fix.

Browser Power Consumption

Ignoring the IE9 propaganda – just for a second… LOOK CHROME REALLY DOES SUCK. Google really have their work cut out there. As more and more people get laptops, the battery usage of the browser needs to be looked at more closely. Also of interest how Safari fairs on Windows there – someone should do the comparison of browsers on Mac.

Macbook Air Colour Profile

I promised some people in Twitter I’d post this… So I had better really! This is a colour profile for a 2010 that I found on MacRumors. There’s a few there, however this was by far the best one and it makes the display much more of a pleasure to use.

Instructions:

  1. Go to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Monitors (you might have to make the Monitors folder)
  2. Copy the .icc file from the zip file below there
  3. Go to Preferences -> Displays -> Color
  4. Untick “Show profiles for this display only”
  5. Select “MBA13-9cf0 Native 22″ in the list

Enjoy!

Picked up a MacBook Air

It took me a couple of days to decide whether I wanted to pick up a MacBook Air. I’ve been wanting to have a lighter machine to lug around the London tube network for a while now but refused to get the old Air – on the basis that it was a waste of money with a new one coming out so soon.

So – I went out and got the 13″ 128GB model. Now – why did it take a couple of days to decide? Well when you try one in the shop expect to be underwhelmed. Seriously. It feels like a normal MacBook when you use it in the shop. This, for me at least, was because you can’t really pick it up. You can’t lounge back on a bed and use it.

You have to take a punt on it. Get it home and use it in situ – it’ll change your mind quick enough. Right now – I’m lying on my bed as I type this and the machine rests nicely on my leg as I type. I can’t describe how comfortable the machine is to use – it’s almost like it’s not there. It really is that light.

So far, happy with the purchase. It was well worth it. Not an ounce of shopper’s remorse.

Darth Vader calls up Apple about his iPhone 4G

This video is just a nice cartoon of Darth Vader calling up Apple about the problems with his new iPhone. It’s rather comical.

Apple’s HTML5 demo page – but not in Chrome

Apple have opened up a new section on their website devoted to HTML5 demos stating that:

Standards aren’t add-ons to the web. They are the web. And you can start using them today.

Only, their idea of ‘They are the web’ is a little off:

As Google Chrome is based on WebKit and Safari is really just an older (maybe more stable version of WebKit) there is absolutely no reason to do this!

Google ditches Windows on security concerns

Turns out that new employees at Google are no longer given an option to run Windows according to FT.com.

New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system. “Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.”

Wow. Makes sense though. More and more, Windows doesn’t fit into the desktop world and the only companies left on it are those stuck on it due to legacy issues.
