TweetDeck joins the Twitter flock

The last week has been, as I’m sure you can imagine, hectic. It’s all out the bag now – TweetDeck has been acquired by Twitter. It’s absolutely amazing news and I’m really proud to be a part of it. As part of the deal, my employment, along with the entire team, has transferred over to Twitter.

I came along fairly late in the day in all this having only joined in January of this year. I never guessed that by now I’d be working for Twitter as a Software Engineer. I’m totally stoked.

I’ll still be working on mobile clients – and hopefully I’ll get more time to work on Chrome hacks.

So, congratulations everyone! Special congratulations to Iain… it proves that scratching an itch really can lead you down paths you never expect. Let this be a lesson to Software Engineers / Programmers everywhere.

TechCrunch give TweetDeck for iOS a ‘fly’

Very proud of this. TechCrunch do a Fly or Die review of the TweetDeck for iOS that I’ve been working on at TweetDeck for the last 3 months. They give it a fly.

The new TweetDeck for iPhone still lets you add as many columns as you want and swipe through to view different streams, but you also get a unified Home column, which can combine your Twitter and Facebook streams into one. The app has nice subtle touches, such as the diagonal swipe to see more Tweets from the same account (my favorite). And instead of timestamps cluttering each Tweet, the timestamp changes at the top as you scroll through your stream. If you want to jump to the top to the most recent Tweet, just tap the actual time (yeah, someone had to point that one out to me too, but these are the kinds of hidden features power users love).

WTB Photos in the iPhone Simulator?

Simple but not obvious.

  1. Load up simulator
  2. Grab a finder window
  3. Drag jpg/png into iPhone Simulator window
  4. It’ll open up Safari
  5. Long click on Image
  6. Save Image
  7. (If this is the first time on this emulator) Long click on Image and Save Image again

This way you can use the picker and everything. Great. Better than the solutions of random folders in ~/Library I think

New job! Awesomes

It’s really time I got around to posting again. It’s been quite a while and although not many people outside of family and friends really read this blog; it’s about time I updated “the Internet”

I started work as a Mobile Developer for TweetDeck in London last month. It somewhat explains the lack of posting recently as well as why all the consulting stuff disappeared.

I can’t go into the reasons for moving on from Green Man Gaming. But I’m stoked to be working with such an awesome team of guys and girl and becoming part of bringing a great way to experience Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and more to mobile devices.

The first month has gone great. Jumped straight into iOS work and the new TweetDeck for iPhone. It’s a complete re-write of what is currently available and it is looking awesome. I look forward to it being in the wider world.

I update Twitter far more than I update my blog… so you should follow me @joolz.

Darth Vader calls up Apple about his iPhone 4G

This video is just a nice cartoon of Darth Vader calling up Apple about the problems with his new iPhone. It’s rather comical.

What is Apple being so defensive about…?

They claim it’s a software problem – but lab testing has proved that the phone really does have an antenna problem:

I’m sorry Apple, but this isn’t good enough. The release of this phone was premature and the significant lack of QA is really quite concerning. At least you can’t delete my blog post like you can all the forum posts on your own forums detailing the problem. The pending software fix will make it look like you have more bars. You’ll still drop calls though – so don’t believe the fix is a proper fix. Also – if a case fixes the problem I reckon Apple should provide them free of charge. Consumers in the UK have the right to have bought a working product after all.

Really, at the moment, it is just an expensive iPod with a great screen. I mean that, the device is stunning to hold and use… it just needs a serious defect addressing.

iOS 4 is a “Told you so” OS

As linked to by John Gruber’s blog DaringFireball, this video is a great proof that iOS 4 is just one big ‘told you so’ – and this is without multitasking:

Wow, well that sucks a bit. Let’s look at the main headline features:

  • Multitasking
  • Desktop Folders
  • Unified Inbox
  • Better data encryption/security

Other than Desktop Folders, the public have been crying out for these features on the iPhone – especially as other Mobile OSs (read: Android and Blackberry) implement most of the features so readily.

Well – the public got what they asked for. Proof that the customer isn’t always right and companies shouldn’t be so ready to give into demands. All these features are now slowing your device to a crawl – hope you’re enjoying them!

And yes, it effects your games too – as things like encryption run constantly in the background on the device. Other blogs are complaining iPad is no longer as secure as the iPhone – I hope it stays that way for a long long time yet.

More Tube Status malarky

Turns out when I thought I fixed it, I hadn’t. The weekend saw the planned engineering work not appearing properly on the iPhone application. Thankfully I noticed this while I was working on the Android port.

This was fixed last night (bit late again, sorry about that). Sorry for any inconvenience caused by that. At least it’s fixed now I guess. I also noticed that the last_updated date of the DLR status wasn’t updating, even though the status itself was updating – that is now also fixed.

Tube Status App broke – but now it’s fixed!

Yesterday I updated the Tube Status server to deal with the new page structure over on the Tfl website. I haven’t been using the app recently and didn’t realise it wasn’t updating. Thanks to Tony, a driver on the H&C/Circle lines for pointing out the problem. I owe him a beer! Sorry for it being down – but it proves that e-mailingĀ for support from iTunes does work.

I wonder how many other tube workers use the app.
