A set of numbers to end Digg?

Could 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0 mark the end of the mighty Digg? Has Digg.com become just another .com prostitute posing most virginally as a haven for freedom of speech? Oh one would wish not, but this is what seems to have happened.

Again, I don’t overly care what the numbers are. But isn’t it amusing that Digg is completely taken over by them. Hell, people are editing posts on their blogs to make the numbers appear EVERYWHERE.

A true testament to how information is free on the web.

Update on the future of Sigil and Vanguard

Interestingly, the Exec. Producer of Vanguard, Brad “Aradune” McQuaid has posted on the offical Vanguard support forums with details of what’s happeninga at Sigil.

SOE is in discussions with Sigil regarding the future of Vanguard and Sigil Games in Carlsbad.  Talks are going well and first and foremost, our primary concern right now is what’s best for Vanguard and its community.  We want to ensure that this game and its community have a healthy future.  The specifics that we work out over the coming days will all be with that single goal in mind.

This is interesing as there are stacks of rumours going around the Internet at the moment about the future of Vanguard.

In my opinion, it’s a really good game. I’ve been playing it over the last week. The servers have taken a hit from the Lord of the Rings effect. But that’s fine. They’ll all come back when they realise what little end game there is. But, that’s another story!

The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™ : Patch notes

The patch notes for today’s Lord of the Rings Online patch were more than a little amusing:

The NPC Nási (which when translated was Nazi in French) is now named Morór.

Amazing the amount of QA that went into that then :)

Vista in death moment

Thank you avast! for breaking my Vista install.

Bit of a shame really – but it upgraded last night and rebooted as normal. I didn’t bother logging back in, went to bed.

Got back to the machine in the morning to Log In. It said Logging Off! So I tried to Log In again and when it got to the desktop, it claimed all my Recycle Bins were corrupt and they needed rebuilding. I couldn’t even run a Command Prompt. No Start Menu, Win+E didn’t work either.

So I hit hard reset and tried to log in again. Same problem.

It appears that avast was blocking access to everything on the machine. It meant I had no premissions to access anything as a logged in user. So I promptly rebooted into Safe Mode and uninstalled it.

Problem gone!

But it does highlight an important point. Just like you don’t trust Microsoft Updates (hence why companies use WSUS to handle updates), don’t trust your AV vendor either. Always test the update on a non-major machine first.

That said – why can’t I trust my AV vendor? I have done for years!

Oh well, gone to a trial of Trend. Have you tried running Vista without AV? I can’t stand the moaning :)

Gamecube Games on the Wii

There’s me, all excited that I got Zelda off Ebay for my Wii, only to find out that Nintendo (this is just cheeky) have made it so that you still need to use a GameCube memory card to save games. Why couldn’t they dynamically patch the game in RAM to save to SD/internal Memory?

So it’ll cost even MORE money to play GameCube games. Thanks Nintendo.

The joys of blog

Yes yes, i’ve been a bit slack of late and not been posting as much as I should.

A lot of things have been happening, plus work has been really really busy (although I can’t talk about why).

I’ve got a lot to post about… a holiday to Florida, Stackless Python, Vista… So i’ll be playing catch up for a bit… This isn’t one of those ‘I should just blog more’ type posts. I really did lose a lot of self asteem for it when I lost the database.

Say No to 0870

Saw this in the Metro this morning and I feel it’s worth a mention. SayNoTo0870.com provide a lookup of those pesky ‘non-national’ numbers that exist for the Customer Services Departments of many a company here in the United Kingdom.

I like the search service, very nice. It means I can call these numbers from my Orange Mobile Phone for free using my inclusive minutes. Nice.

MySQL ate my hamster!

Well, it ate the blog’s database at least. No fun at all in fact. It deleted the .MYI and .MYD files for no apparant reason.

Oh well, time to start writing again :)
