Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Censorship

This weekend I picked up a copy of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for the Playstation 3. Ok, so the game is a bit short (only took a couple of hours to complete "Medium"). It’s also way too easy, and only actually has ONE guitar battle!

Those issues aren’t my major gripe, however.

After you complete the game you get to unlock a number of tracks in "The Vault". Excellent. Ok, so then I decide to unlock a favourite of mine called "Pink". One of the lines goes "Makes me as high as a kite". In the game, they removed the word "high" as if it was a swear word.

Seriously, what’s gone wrong in the world? Why are we censoring the word High in relation to the colour Pink?

Calibrating a laptop battery

This week I noticed my battery in my laptop went from a ‘health’ of 85% down to 64%! My laptop is a MacBook Pro (bought in December last year).

I noticed it while in Starbucks wondering why the battery had gone from its usual 4 hours of life down to 2. I was quite worried when I Google’d to discover quite a few people with problem batteries. Then… I found the Apple Battery Calibration article.

Success! My battery is back up to 89% ‘health’ and I have a don’t have to spend the £99 that Apple like to charge for batteries.

I’ll be remembering to do this every couple of months from now on.

Update OpenSolaris 2008.5 and find you can’t boot

I’ve been quite busy recently (you know, getting married etc.) and discovered this week that Sun had finally updated OpenSolaris 2008.5 with a new set of updates.

Wow, cool! So I drop to a terminal and do:

pkg image-update

Great! 2GB of downloads later (I kid you not – they need to work on that) I hit reboot. Well, type reboot, there is no actual way to reboot from their Gnome setup.

Oh look, it no longer boots. So I start digging and discover this post on their ‘other’ forums. Yes, there are two sets of OpenSolaris forums (thanks Sun).

General jist:

  1. Boot from LiveCD and drop to a root terminal (su password is ‘opensolaris’)
  2. zfs import -f rpool
  3. mount -F zfs rpool/ROOT/opensolaris /mnt
  4. /mnt/boot/solaris/bin/update_grub -R /mnt
  5. reboot

Tada! You’ll boot again. Thanks Sun. Please please PLEASE start posting this stuff in places where people know to look… like your official OpenSolaris site!

I got married!

Important non-technical post! On the 14th June, 2008 – I got married to Christy whom I have been engaged to for about 18 months.

A small excerpt of the speech I gave:

“Christy, you can’t help being lovely… you can help becoming my bride. Today I married my best friend – the woman I laugh with, live for and dream with”.

Here’s to many more years of happiness!
